A DBS check is a record of a person’s criminal convictions and cautions – carried out by the Disclosure and Barring Service for Applicants living in England, Northern Ireland and Wales or Disclosure Scotland for applicants living in Scotland.

A CRB check is a Criminal Records Bureau check that originally launched in 2002. The checks were in place until the introduction of the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) in 2012.

A DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service) does not have an official expiry date. Any information which is included on the check will be accurate at the time the check was carried out.

The Basic DBS Check certificate fee is currently £23 for the Disclosure and Barring Service and £25 for Disclosure Scotland. CRB Direct processing fees range from £3.00 up to £33 depending on the number of committed annual checks.

Applicants in England, Wales & Overseas applicants will be issued by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). Applicants in Scotland or Scottish applicants overseas will be issued by Disclosure Scotland.

Basic DBS checks can be requested by an Individual or Employer for many different reasons, anyone may apply for this check as long as they have the permission of the applicant.

An individual cannot apply for their own Enhanced or Standard DBS check – only organisations can apply for these types of checks if the positions are eligible.

When applying for a DBS Check there are processes involved as part of the DBS application form. Several forms of identification must be evidenced by guidance set out by either the DBS or Disclosure Scotland, so every check will be subject to an administration fee to cover the cost of processing the check.

The certificate will be sent out in the post once the application has been completed however a downloadable summary report is available at request.

In most cases, the Basic DBS application is completed and the certificate sent out within 14 days from the point where the applicant has satisfied all of the application requirements.
