Although the Criminal Records Bureau initially managed criminal records in England and Wales, it merged with the Independent Safeguarding Authority in 2012 to create the Disclosure and Barring Service.

  • Basic DBS Check
  • Standard DBS Check
  • Enhanced DBS Check

Individuals can request their own Basic DBS Check, but only businesses and organisations can request Standard and Enhanced DBS Checks. An Enhanced DBS Check can also include checking the Children’s and Adult Barred List, which details people who cannot work with children or vulnerable adults.

 

Disclosure Scotland

Part of the Scottish Government, Disclosure Scotland, was created in 2002 to provide criminal record disclosure services. As the name suggests, the service is focused solely on those residing in Scotland, and disclosures are available in the following formats.

  • Basic Disclosure
  • Standard Disclosure
  • Enhanced Disclosure

Those carrying out regulated work with children and vulnerable adults will also need a PVG Certificate. The Protecting Vulnerable Groups scheme is designed to offer businesses and organisations in Scotland a thorough screening method that includes spent and unspent convictions and relevant police information.

If the circumstances have changed regarding a person's criminal history, then membership in the PVG Scheme will be withdrawn.

 

How Long Does It Take to Receive a Completed Disclosure?
