Background screening is an essential component of many human resource departments, but there can be times when the terminology used leads to confusion. One of the most commonly asked questions regarding background checks is whether Disclosure Scotland and DBS Checks are the same.
Although both serve a similar purpose, DBS and Disclosure Scotland Checks are different entities. The following is an overview of each organisation and the role each plays regarding background screening.
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS Check)
Although the Criminal Records Bureau initially managed criminal records in England and Wales, it merged with the Independent Safeguarding Authority in 2012 to create the Disclosure and Barring Service.
The Disclosure and Barring Service provide three different checks, which are as follows.
- Basic DBS Check
- Standard DBS Check
- Enhanced DBS Check
Individuals can request their own Basic DBS Check, but only businesses and organisations can request Standard and Enhanced DBS Checks. An Enhanced DBS Check can also include checking the Children’s and Adult Barred List, which details people who cannot work with children or vulnerable adults.
Disclosure Scotland
Part of the Scottish Government, Disclosure Scotland, was created in 2002 to provide criminal record disclosure services. As the name suggests, the service is focused solely on those residing in Scotland, and disclosures are available in the following formats.
- Basic Disclosure
- Standard Disclosure
- Enhanced Disclosure
Those carrying out regulated work with children and vulnerable adults will also need a PVG Certificate. The Protecting Vulnerable Groups scheme is designed to offer businesses and organisations in Scotland a thorough screening method that includes spent and unspent convictions and relevant police information.
If the circumstances have changed regarding a person's criminal history, then membership in the PVG Scheme will be withdrawn.
How Long Does It Take to Receive a Completed Disclosure?
Whether a business is based in Scotland, England or Wales, a completed disclosure can take between two and 14 days to receive. However, if a mistake has been made or incorrect information has been given, the request could take longer to process.
Fortunately, there are ways of fast-tracking DBS and Disclosure Scotland, including using a professional agency.
What Are the Benefits of Using a Professional Disclosure Company?
Although requesting a disclosure can seem straightforward, when there are multiple checks to contend with, a business can find it loses track regarding the recruitment process. Enlisting the services of a professional disclosure company allows businesses fast and easy access to background checks and will enable them to deal with other demanding aspects of the recruitment process.
Using a professional agency also ensures businesses can request several checks at once and still enjoy a quick turnaround compared to conventional disclosure requests.
If your business wants to make the most of background checks in Scotland, why not take advantage of outsourcing disclosure requests today?
